About Ethereum
Ethereum is a programmable blockchain that launched in July 2015. It was designed to run programs known as smart contracts on a shared network. These contracts support a large ecosystem of decentralised finance, stablecoins, digital assets and other applications. Ether (ETH) is the network's native asset and is used to pay transaction fees. In September 2022, Ethereum replaced proof-of-work mining with proof of stake in an upgrade commonly called The Merge, changing how the network is secured and how new ETH is issued. Ethereum has no fixed maximum supply. New ETH is issued through the staking system, while the protocol burns a portion of transaction fees. Layer 2 networks process transactions separately and submit data or proofs back to Ethereum for settlement, increasing the system's effective capacity while retaining a connection to the base chain. ETH trades on open markets and has historically experienced substantial price volatility.
