About XRP
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain that began operating in 2012. The ledger was designed for payments and currency exchange and can settle transactions without proof-of-work mining or proof-of-stake validation. Instead, participating servers use the XRP Ledger Consensus Protocol to agree on the order and outcome of transactions. The full initial supply of 100 billion XRP was created when the ledger began rather than issued through mining. Part of that supply was later placed in escrow accounts governed by scheduled releases. Every transaction destroys a small amount of XRP as a transaction cost, which also helps deter spam; this means total supply declines gradually as the network is used. XRP can act as a bridge asset when value is exchanged between different currencies or assets. It trades independently on open markets and has historically experienced substantial price volatility.
