About Dogecoin

Dogecoin launched in December 2013 as a light-hearted alternative to Bitcoin. It was derived from existing cryptocurrency software and named after the Doge internet meme. The network uses proof-of-work mining and targets a new block approximately every minute. Dogecoin is merge-mined with Litecoin, allowing compatible miners to contribute work to both networks during the same mining process. DOGE is used to pay transaction fees and transfer value across the network. Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no maximum supply. A fixed block reward introduces new DOGE with each block, so the number of coins continues to increase while the annual issuance represents a decreasing percentage of the existing supply over time. Dogecoin has also been used for online tipping and small transfers. DOGE trades on open markets and has historically experienced substantial price volatility.
