About NEAR Protocol
NEAR Protocol is a proof-of-stake blockchain whose mainnet launched in 2020. The network uses sharding to divide transaction processing across parallel parts of the system. Accounts can use human-readable names rather than only hexadecimal addresses. NEAR also supports meta-transactions and gas-sponsorship patterns that allow an application or another account to cover transaction fees for a user. NEAR is the native asset and is used to pay fees and stake with validators that participate in securing the network. A portion of transaction fees is burned, while protocol issuance provides staking rewards. The project also develops chain-abstraction tools intended to help applications and users interact across multiple blockchain networks through shared account and transaction infrastructure. These capabilities continue to evolve as the relevant protocols and tooling are developed. NEAR trades on open markets and has historically experienced substantial price volatility.
