About Polkadot
Polkadot launched in 2020 as a network designed to connect specialised blockchains. Its Relay Chain provides shared security and consensus, while connected rollups, historically called parachains, execute their own application logic. Through Agile Coretime, projects obtain access to Polkadot's computational cores and shared security by acquiring coretime rather than relying on the network's former slot-auction model. Connected chains can also exchange messages through Polkadot's cross-consensus messaging system. DOT is the native asset and is used for staking and OpenGov, Polkadot's on-chain governance system for protocol and treasury decisions. The Hard Pressure issuance model introduced in March 2026 established a maximum total supply of 2.1 billion DOT and a stepped issuance schedule that reduces new issuance as supply approaches that ceiling. DOT trades on open markets and has historically experienced substantial price volatility.
