About Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the first decentralised cryptocurrency. It was described in a 2008 white paper published under the name Satoshi Nakamoto, and the network began operating in January 2009. Bitcoin runs on a public blockchain maintained by a distributed set of participants. New blocks are produced roughly every ten minutes through proof-of-work mining, in which miners compete to add valid blocks and receive protocol-defined rewards. The block reward halves approximately every four years, and the protocol limits total supply to 21 million BTC. Transactions are recorded and settled on Bitcoin's base chain. Additional payment networks built around Bitcoin, such as the Lightning Network, can process transfers away from the base chain before final settlement. Bitcoin does not provide the same general-purpose smart-contract environment as platforms designed primarily for programmable applications. Its market price has historically experienced substantial fluctuations and extended drawdowns.
