About Cardano
Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain that launched in September 2017. It is known for a research-led development approach. Ouroboros, its proof-of-stake consensus family, and other parts of Cardano's protocol design have been published through academic research, including peer-reviewed work. ADA is the network's native asset and is used for transaction fees, staking and on-chain governance. Cardano added support for smart contracts in 2021, enabling developers to deploy programmable applications on the network. ADA holders can delegate their stake to a stake pool without transferring ownership of their coins, while stake-pool operators participate in producing blocks. The protocol limits total supply to 45 billion ADA. New circulating coins are released from a reserve through the staking-reward system rather than created without a defined ceiling. ADA trades on open markets and has historically experienced substantial price volatility and extended drawdowns.
